A Bridge Might Be Needed to Replace a Tooth Lost to a Severe Cavity

Published on June 29, 2017

When a cavity develops on one of your teeth it can gradually spread to compromise more of the tooth. Without professional treatment, the tooth decay could cause the tooth to fracture or allow a serious infection to form in the root of the tooth.

Dr. BJ Showman might be able to treat a tooth in this condition with a root canal and a dental crown. However, if the tooth is severely compromised or a large abscess has formed in the gums, she] might recommend extracting the tooth. This can help ease the pain and prevent further infection.

When you’re ready, Dr. BJ Showman can start the process of replacing the tooth with a dental bridge. This is one solid piece of dental work that replicates the appearance and function of the original tooth. It is fused to a pair of crowns on each end.

To properly anchoring the dental bridge in your mouth, Dr. BJ Showman will need to create a pair of abutments. This is done by removing the tooth enamel layer from each of the teeth neighboring the void.

A detailed impression will be created of the two abutments and the related teeth in the area. It will be sent to a dental lab to guide technicians while they create your dental bridge. Temporary crowns will then be cemented over each abutment to protect it.

When your dental bridge is ready a staff member will call you to schedule a second appointment. This session will be brief. Dr. BJ Showman will simply remove the temporary crowns and cement your dental bridge firmly onto the abutments.
